A Message from the Pastor & Next Gen Director

Our Vision

Church of the Nativity exists to love God, love others and make disciples. Nowhere else are we more effectively making disciples than by reaching the next generation. Kids and students who are on the discipleship path can, in turn, be very effective in reaching the unchurched because if they love being here, they often bring their family and friends. When our parish prioritizes the next generation, we all experience and enjoy vitality and growth.

Our History

Church of the Nativity was established in 1968 as a distinctly different kind of parish. Solidly built on the foundation of our Catholic Tradition and Eucharistic faith, it was to embody the new priorities and initiatives of the Second Vatican Council: reengaging the modern world with the message of Jesus Christ. In more recent years, our parish leadership rediscovered this purpose as God placed a bold new vision on our hearts, to reach unchurched Catholics in North Baltimore.

God’s vision for our church led us to unprecedented growth in every measurable way, most evident in attendance at weekend programs and services. The Vision Campaign in 2016 led to the construction of our sanctuary, nearly tripling our seating capacity for weekend Masses. But we knew there was more to do.

Our Challenge

Originally constructed in 1970 as classroom space for religious education, the east wing of our Ridgely Road facility is long overdue for repairs and renewal. But expansion of this wing has also become critically important for our current and future programming needs. On a typical weekend, over 1,000 children and students, from 6 weeks to Grade 12, join us in a facility intended for less than a third that number.

Other challenges presented by this space include a chapel that can only accommodate the smallest of gatherings, forcing us to hold weddings, baptisms and funerals in our main sanctuary, a space often unsuited for those ceremonies. On a weekly basis, we experience a distinct lack of meeting and breakout space, precluding on-campus adult small groups and other faith formation programs.

Our Plan

In recent years, our parish leaders have been working to assess the potential for our campus facilities to better serve the Next Generation. As part of this process we engaged the architectural firm of Hord Coplan Macht to develop a plan for the Next Gen Wing. More recently, we have partnered with civil engineers  Morris & Ritchie Associates to shepherd us through design development as well as the approval and building phases.

Our plan is to undertake the following:

  • Adding 17,000 state-of-the-art square feet would double our capacity.
  • Welcoming families into the Next Gen Wing in a bright, beautiful new atrium with dynamic, interactive check-in and safety features.
  • Designating a space for our youngest children in a nursery that is safe, secure, vibrant, visible and closer to the front of the building.
  • Transforming the current narrow central classroom corridor into spacious gathering spaces suited to our small group strategy.
  • Expanding our building upward and creating additional space for student and adult small groups as well as meeting the administrative needs of the parish.
  • Doubling the capacity of the Chapel and designating it as a worship space to accommodate weddings, baptisms, funerals, and daily Mass.
  • Utilizing our outdoor space with an amphitheater backing up to the forest conservation area and adding a playground.
  • Upgrading the long-outdated infrastructure of the wing with new systems for heating and cooling, security, roofing and electricity.

Our Impact

We do not yet know many of the people whose lives this project will impact. Your children, grandchildren, and godchildren will benefit in the near future, but our dream is that their children will benefit even more. Generation upon generation will come to know the wonders of the Lord because of the foundation we give them at Nativity.

Our Sacraments

The next generation receives God’s grace in a distinctively Catholic form through the Sacraments. We are welcoming a growing number of kids and students celebrating in our Sacramental programs year after year.

Our Capacity

Each Next Gen program will be given more meeting space that is dedicated and designed for our young people. We believe in the transformative power of small groups—gatherings of peers where faith conversations, activities and prayer are shared and hearts are changed. With a significant increase in square footage, meeting space and technology, we would have ample opportunities for youth participation now and room to grow in the future.

Our Goal

Our goal is that every parish household participate in this campaign and give in a generous and sacrificial manner. Our goal is to create an irresistible environment to engage and equip the next generation of our parishioners, and generations to come, in their faith. Our goal is to successfully reach the thousands of youth in our parish community who are not currently engaged and help them know, love and serve the Lord.

Our Prayer

Our prayer is that this campaign inspires our parish to share the wonders of the Lord with those that come after us, as more and more people in our community and beyond come to know Christ.

Each weekend, we share in the sense of wonder as the next generation embraces their growing faith. We hear it as our preschoolers walk out of All Stars proclaiming, “Jesus is my friend forever!” We see it as the imagination of hundreds of elementary kids is sparked by the Gospel story in Time Travelers and Quest. We hear it in the voices of our middle schoolers at Resurrection as they sing worship music led by their peers in the Student Band. We recognize it as the Holy Spirit brings our high schoolers to their knees in Eucharistic Adoration on our weekend retreats. Perhaps most of all, we see it through the willingness to serve across generations—over 150 teens and preteens serve as ministers for an age group below them in Next Gen Ministry.

FAQs

How many kids participate in our Next Gen programs?

We have 1000 kids and students on our campus many weekends. This year we welcomed:

  • 733 kids and students in our small groups programs called Quest (grades 1-4), Resurrection (grades 5-8), and Uprising (grades 9-12)
  • About 400 kids into All Stars (ages 6 weeks to 6 years)
  • 250 kids in Time Travelers each week (elementary age Children’s Liturgy of the Word)
  • 168 teens to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation
  • 127 kids and students to receive First Reconciliation and Communion

While these numbers are strong, they represent only a portion of the children and students in our parish community. Many families who call Nativity their church home are not yet engaged in our programs due to space limitations. This campaign allows us to expand and enhance our facilities, making room for even more kids to participate..

Will kids and students be displaced during construction?

Yes, there will be some temporary adjustments, but our programs will continue without interruption. The Theatre and Pavilion will remain available. We will need to get creative for at least one year of programming — small groups could meet in the Theatre, All Stars could be adapted for the Pavilion, students could gather in home groups, we could borrow space for the year, but bottom line, our programs will not stop during construction.

The space seems fine to me. Why are we undertaking a capital campaign?

While our current space has served us well, it is limiting our ability to reach more kids and families. Many children in our parish community are not engaged simply because we do not have the capacity to welcome them.

At the same time, our infrastructure, including heating, cooling, security, and electrical systems, has exceeded its lifespan and requires urgent upgrades. Since we must address these needs, we are seizing this opportunity to create a space designed for today’s dynamic and growing faith formation programs.

This campaign is not just about fixing buildings. It is about ensuring that every child who wants to be part of our community has a place to grow in faith.

What about parking? Any plans to expand the parking lot?

We recognize the need for more parking and are actively exploring solutions. Due to the complexities involved in expanding the capacity of our lot, we’ve made parking a separate project. In the meantime, we are pursuing alternative options to improve accessibility for our growing community.

How much will this cost?

We estimate that the project will cost $15 million.

The Vision Campaign cost about the same amount to build an entirely new sanctuary. Why is it so expensive?

The short answer is inflation. The Vision Campaign was opened in 2014. In the last decade, construction costs have increased substantially.

Can Nativity afford to fund this project?

Yes. We believe our community has capacity to fund this project. Our offertory at church has grown substantially in recent years. We’ve gone from a $3 million operating budget when we began the Vision Campaign to $6.5 million today.

How many square feet are being added?

17,000 square feet are being added.

How can I make my pledge?

You have many options. Most people choose to make a three-year commitment to increase their giving capacity. You can give through stock and assets, automatic giving at any interval, or giving at your discretion. Some people are more comfortable with writing a check and making a gift up front. Contact our Finance Director Brandon Hollern to learn more at bhollern@churchnativity.com.

Does the Archdiocese approve of this project?

Yes, the campaign was approved by two committees in the Archdiocese of Baltimore that rigorously review capital campaign proposals. We received approval from the Archbishop in September of 2024.

What is the timeline for this project?

Our goal is to break ground in May of 2027. The timeline depends on funding, as well as permitting and construction schedules. If our community rallies together in support of this campaign and we avoid unexpected delays, we are on track to begin construction as planned.

What if our parish leadership changes? Will we still need this building project?

The fruits of the Wonder Campaign will outlive all our parish leaders. It’s a gift we are presenting to our children and to our children’s children and generations to come. The campaign is supported by our pastor and staff, but it will ultimately give us capacity to continue growing and reaching the lost in our community.

When will this project be completed?

Our ambitious hope is to open the new building in Fall 2028. That is dependent on innumerable factors, including funding, permits, construction, and the many elements it takes to complete this project.

Will all parishioners be able to use the new space? Or Just kids?

The space isn’t just for the young. All ages can use it! We would have meeting space to accommodate prayer groups, ministries, adult small groups, and something we’re particularly excited about: parent small groups that meet while their kids are in program.

Are you naming the new building?

No. As with the church building itself there will be no “naming rights” or memorials. Neither the new wing nor any of its fixtures or finishes will bear anyone’s name.

Is the Archdiocese helping?

The Archdiocese of Baltimore does not help us financially, but the Director of Facilities and Real Estate provides guidance and oversight to the project.

Are you using the same team as the last project?

We are working with the Baltimore architectural firm of Hord, Coplan, and Macht, the same firm that designed the Pavilion in 2004. For the construction phase, we are following Archdiocesan guidelines to evaluate and select the best partners for the project.

Will the pavilion/theatre be updated?

The Pavilion and Theatre will not be renovated, but we intend to update them to match the new finishes and space we are adding.

Will there be greater access to the chapel throughout the week?

Yes! The upgrades to the building will allow us to offer more times for adoration and quiet prayer. The Chapel can also host Masses, weddings, funerals, baptisms, and other worship events.
